Lyric Receives $ 2 Million Grant

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is awarding $2 million to the internationally acclaimed company, to fund projects that include the world premiere opera Bel Canto, creation of which is being curated by Renée Fleming.

 

Lyric Opera of Chicago announced it has received a $2 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support expanded community engagement and new artistic initiatives.

A portion of the grant will help fund the creation of a multifaceted new initiative, Lyric Unlimited, that is to include a number of community engagement and education projects to be announced in the near future.

Another portion of the grant will provide lead support for Lyric's previously announced world-premiere commission, "Bel Canto," an opera based on the best-selling novel by Ann Patchett. Renée Fleming, Lyric's creative consultant, is curating the project.The new opera, with music by Jimmy Lopez and libretto by Nilo Cruz, is scheduled to premiere here in December 2015.
