For only the third time in its 125-year history, the Metropolitan Opera's Opening Night Gala this year stars and celebrates a single performer, the luminous Renée Fleming, who joins a pantheon that includes Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. For Fleming - "the most prominent and celebrated soprano of the new century," as Wayne Koestenbaum noted in Vogue in 2001 - the evening represents the crowning triumph of her career at the Met, where she has sung eighteen roles since her debut, as the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, in 1991....
